Updated: Feb 23, 2020

Long, straight lines affect you, your home, your art

Part 1 of a 4 part series

In the elements of interior design, there are 4 types of LINES:

Horizontals: straight and parallel.

Wavy, curved, curricular.

Diagonals: zig-zag.

Verticals: Up and down.

In this Part 1 we'll explore Horizontal Lines.

Horizontal lines are a flat, smooth visual element that parallels the ground. Because objects that are lateral to the earth are at rest, horizontal lines suggest a feeling of repose and suggest a solid, harmonious relationship with the earth.

These lines evoke feelings of stability, grounding, emphasis and direction, giving them a sense of tranquility.

Horizontal lines = Relaxed Home Decor

Picture in your mind’s eye a setting sun. See it sinking along the horizon of a vast Nebraska prairie.

Notice in the picture above the strong, flat line across the horizon line. Adding to the calmness and serenity in the art is the continuation of the horizontal feel in the cloud banks.

Long horizontal lines can visually expand space, making rooms appear wider or longer, and lower ceiling height.

In the room below, notice the prominent horizontal movement in the strong horizontal white woodwork against the soft blue wall. Again you can see how the Wainscoting molding lowers the ceiling height.

Notice in the painting above how the birds perch on a straight red line. This strong horizontal line adds to the tranquil feeling. Also the even, linear movement in the pattern of the bedspread strengthen the serenity of the horizontals.

HORIZONTAL lines convey a sense of security and relaxation by grounding the space. They bring the eye level down and visually lower the ceiling in a space to create a sense of intimacy.

Tip - To achieve relaxed home decor:

Consider placing a painting with strong horizontal elements in a reading room or bedroom for a more tranquil state of mind.

Remember if you go overboard with in a room with too many horizontal lines it may become boring and lack interest.
