'Standing Through Seasons' -original - 20h x 10"

$325.00Price

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a cheerleader.

Junior high? I made it.

High school? Entirely different story.

Two Detroit suburban junior highs merged into one massive high school. My graduating class alone had 996 students.

I gave tryouts everything I had.

Didn't even make the reserve team.

Sophomore year came and went, but cheering stayed lodged somewhere in my ribcage.

So when junior year tryouts rolled around, I practiced alone in the backyard.

I shouted cheers at the cherry tree.

The birds offered unsolicited commentary.

I worked on jumps. Repeated my routine. Built a smile so wide it could've inflated a parade balloon.

And this time?

I made the squad.

Not reserve.

Varsity.

Funny the things that come back while you're painting.

This Lake Michigan snow fence has probably stood through wind, snow, heat, and storms. It doesn't seem particularly concerned with what season it's in.

It just keeps facing the forward.

Maybe that's what caught my attention.
