'Summer Refuge' - original oil 20h x 10w
It was tradition.
Every summer, leaving the heat of Detroit behind, my family would pile into our non-air-conditioned 1965 Chevy and head north.
Elk Lake was our destination.
Diving into that iceberg-cold water felt refreshing—but the real magic happened the moment we arrived at the cabin.
Tucked among towering pines, the ground cushioned my feet with a thick carpet of evergreen needles. A whisper moved through the trees. A gentle breeze carried the scent of pine.
Even now, years later, my shoulders drop a little every time I stand among trees.
Green still knows how to do that.
That feeling—quiet, steady, alive—is why green brings me a sense of peace.
And this June, despite all the rain, West Michigan has been showing off.
The greens seem brighter.
The pines a little deeper.
The birches a little lighter. As usual, nature found a way to inspire me.
